The Montblanc Meisterstück collection, launched in 1924, has embodied writing excellence for a century. A true icon of the Montblanc house, it comes in several sizes to suit every hand and every purpose. This guide details the exact dimensions, features and differences between each model.
The four Meisterstück sizes
The Meisterstück range consists of four main formats, identified by their historic reference numbers:
| Model | Ref. | Length (capped) | Diameter | Available types |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classique | 144 / 145 | 138 mm | 12 mm | Fountain, Roller, Ballpoint |
| Midsize | — | ≈ 116 mm | 12 mm | Ballpoint only |
| LeGrand | 146 / 161 / 162 | 146 mm | 15 mm | Fountain, Roller, Ballpoint |
| 149 | 149 | 150 mm | 16 mm | Fountain pen only |
Meisterstück Classique (ref. 144/145)
The Classique is the most compact format in the range. At 138 mm capped with a 12 mm diameter, it offers a light and discreet feel in hand. Available as a fountain pen (ref. 144, 14-carat gold nib), rollerball (ref. 163) and ballpoint (ref. 164), it is the ideal choice for everyday use or slipping into a jacket pocket.
The Classique comes in two finishes: platinum (rhodium-plated fittings) and gold (gold-plated fittings). The body is made from hand-polished black precious resin.
Meisterstück Midsize
The Midsize is an intermediate format exclusively available as a ballpoint pen. Shorter than the Classique (approximately 116 mm), it was designed to slip into a diary or small case. This model is valued for its discretion while retaining the balance and weight characteristic of the Meisterstück range.
Note: contrary to a common misconception, the Midsize does not exist as a fountain pen or rollerball.
Meisterstück LeGrand (ref. 146)
The LeGrand is the most popular format in the collection, often considered the "ideal size". At 146 mm in length and 15 mm in diameter, it offers remarkable writing comfort for long sessions. The bicolour 14-carat gold nib (ref. 146) is available in EF, F, M and B points.
The LeGrand also comes as a rollerball (ref. 162) and ballpoint (ref. 161). It is the most frequently chosen model for business gifts, thanks to its perfect balance between elegance and comfort.
Meisterstück 149 — The Diplomat
The 149, nicknamed "The Diplomat", is Montblanc's flagship. At 150 mm in length, with a generous 16 mm diameter and an 18-carat gold nib, it is an exceptional instrument reserved for discerning enthusiasts. Available as a fountain pen only, it is handcrafted in the Hamburg workshops.
The 149 is the pen of choice for heads of state and collectors. Its piston-fill mechanism offers superior ink capacity, and its massive 18-carat gold nib can be ordered in EF, F, M, B and BB points.
How to choose the right size?
- Small to medium hands → Classique (138 mm): light, discreet, versatile.
- On-the-go use → Midsize (ballpoint): compact, practical for travel.
- Comfortable daily use → LeGrand (146 mm): the best size/comfort compromise.
- Extended writing / collecting → 149 (150 mm): the ultimate writing experience.

Comments
Dear Fernando,
Thank you for your question. Your set measuring 11.5cm capped sounds like it could be a Meisterstück Classique in a compact configuration — the mechanical pencil versions tend to be slightly shorter than the pen counterparts.
We’ve completely updated this article with verified Montblanc specifications. The Midsize (approximately 116mm) is indeed a format exclusive to ballpoint pens.
If you’d like a precise identification of your set, feel free to send us photos — we’d be happy to help identify the exact model and reference number.
Best regards,

Dear Philipp,
Thank you for your sharp eye and honest feedback — you were absolutely right. This article was indeed written by AI back in 2023, and the quality reflected the limitations of AI at that time.
We’ve now completely rewritten the article with verified specifications: accurate dimensions for each model (Classique 138mm, LeGrand 146mm, 149 at 150mm), and we’ve corrected the Midsize section to clearly state it is exclusive to ballpoint pens.
The difference between AI in 2023 and AI in 2026 is staggering — capabilities have grown thousands of times over. We hope you’ll find the updated version much more accurate and useful.
Best regards,

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
there’s a bunch of misinformation in here and it feels like it was written by an AI.
A midsize ballpoint pen is in between Classique and LeGrand, hence the name “midsize”. Also, midsize is a size option exclusive to ballpoint pens and a few Boheme pens.
The two segments about the LeGrand are confusing and add no merit to each other. They read like “there’s the LeGrand….and then there’s also the LeGrand”.
Hi. I have a set of Meisterstuck (fountain pen and mechanical pencil) that each measure 11.5cm capped. Is that a midsize? According to your article midsize starts at 12.5cm
Thank you,
